Trail signposting

The Sammiana – Macedonian Endless Trail uses three types of trail markers. The Sammiana metal disc is the official marker that defines the route. Painted stripes and circles are used as additional confirmation marks along the way.

Primary marker — Sammiana disc

Sammiana trail disc marker

The official Sammiana marker is a 12 cm reflective metal disc – red ring on white/grey reflective background, with the Sammiana infinity symbol in the centre. These discs are fixed to trees and posts along the route. They are retroreflective – they light up under a headlamp, making night hiking and navigation in fog significantly safer.

At trail junctions where multiple paths are marked with painted stripes, always follow the direction of the Sammiana disc. The disc defines the official Sammiana route.

Additional confirmation marks

Stripe mark

Red – white – red
Painted on rocks, trees, or posts as route confirmation

Circle mark

White circle with red ring
Used interchangeably with the stripe

What the mark means

Continue straight ahead. All three stripes are horizontal and parallel. You are on route – keep going.

Gentle turn. The three stripes curve together gradually. Follow the direction of the bend.

Sharp turn. The three stripes bend together at ~90°. Do not continue straight – the route turns sharply.

Important: On many sections of Sammiana, trail marking may be partial or absent. Markers confirm you are on route when present – but their absence does not mean you are off route. Always navigate with GPS tracks downloaded before departure. Do not rely on markings alone.
